Special Edition: Fall 2007 Welcome Back

BRAE Ignites Fall Quarter with a Blazing Start and Full Stomachs!

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering faculty and students gathered out front of Lab 4 for the umpteenth annual BRAE “Meet the Department BBQ” held Wednesday evening, September 26th.

Students were challenged by Dr. Stephen Kaminaka to design a “thingamajig” that could withstand the weight of a four-pound goldfish bowl. There were strict restrictions as to how students could design the “thingamajig” and they were only allowed to use materials such as a jumbo sized deck of cards, balloons, straws, and string. The winning design team received “honor and esteem forever.” This activity dared students to think creatively and work cohesively in a team environment.

This task exemplifies the department's mission to prepare students for their lives after college. Beginning with this year's incoming freshmen, the BioResource and Agricultural Engineering program has adopted an explicit graduation requirement regarding a graduate's ability to function on multidisciplinary teams. This provides students an opportunity to practice team skills. Such experience is important for practicing engineers given the ever-increasing diversity of engineering science and applications.

Following the exercise, students were invited to enjoy a hearty meal provided by the BRAE faculty. This event allowed new and current students the opportunity to meet and network with faculty and AES (Agricultural Engineering Society) Club officers. This long-standing annual BBQ has been a tradition of the department for many years.

AES Members Fire Up!

“Get on Fire!” Dr. Bill Kellogg (Agricultural Education and Communication Department) delivered a motivational challenge to the BioResource and Agricultural Engineering students at their first Agricultural Engineering Society [AES] meeting held Wednesday night, October 3rd.

As the guest speaker [also an adjunct BRAE faculty member], Kellogg encouraged current students to develop their full potential at Cal Poly. He clearly outlined the successful path: “promoting yourself in the classroom has several advantages and disadvantages, since connecting with the professor usually leans toward learning more and a higher grade; additionally the professor will also most likely remember your name when you sit up front."

Kellogg also emphasized participating outside the classroom with activities to promote yourself with other students in clubs, the university, in the community, and with industry through internships. At one point Kellogg put forward, “Determine whose job you want….and go after it!" Students were encouraged to set goals, demand value from their instructors, and to keep the big picture of education in mind. Kellogg passed out apples as an object lesson to illustrate that one can count the seeds in an apple, but not the apples in a seed. The seed represents “potential” (the student) who can only reach their full abilities through hard work, dedication, and full participation in what Cal Poly has to offer.

Highlights in Giving

Preston Pipelines, Inc.

Preston Pipelines, Inc., a leading Underground Contractor throughout Northern California, has come forward to support the BioResource and Agricultural Engineering department this year with the Quarterly Senior Project Sponsorship.

This quarter Preston Pipelines, Inc. established a program to support selected Cal Poly students completing senior projects. After evaluating the student's proposal for creativity, value to the student's educational experience, value to the department's graduation requirements, practicality, student's cost to complete project, and value to the student's future career, a cash award is presented by Preston Pipelines at the Fall Career Fair. This quarter's senior project recipient is Seth Rossow.

This past week, Preston Pipelines' Human Resource Manager Butch Lumby again supported the department's recruitment efforts for new students with three awards for the department's cash drawing in the "Recruitment of New BRAE and ASM Students Competition." For this competition the department has decided to invite all current students to encourage and recruit for new students. Current students that recruit new prospective students to apply to Cal Poly for Fall 2008 to either BRAE or ASM majors will receive a gift card for on campus services and a ticket for a drawing to receive the $500, $300, or $200 cash prize drawn from all ticket holders. Lumby believes that Cal Poly students are critical to his recruiting effort for Preston Pipelines. Thank you Preston Pipelines for your continued support and ensuring the future of the program.

Later this month, Preston Pipelines, Inc. will deliver two company trucks for department use. These vehicles will be used by students and faculty for academic and co-curricular activities.

Cal Poly BRAE faculty and students thank Preston Pipelines' management team and field personnel for all the resources and support!

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering Recruitment Updates

BRAE Department Gears Up Marketing Efforts

In an effort to increase student enrollment within the BioResource and Agricultural Engineering Department, faculty and staff have begun brainstorming new marketing strategies. The BioResource and Agricultural Engineering Department Newsletter is a result of that collaboration. The Newsletter will be sent out periodically to inform the public, industry professionals, alumni, and current and prospective students about activities within the department.

Other efforts include the design of BRAE t-shirts and car decals to be used as marketing tools. These items can be ordered by following the link to the order form under the left-hand column section titled “Get Your BRAE Gear Here!” The BRAE department anticipates wide acceptance and success of these advertising efforts and hopes to see an increase in enrollment in the future due to a heightened awareness of the BRAE programs.

BRAE Faculty Take Action!

BRAE faculty hit the road to help spread the word about Cal Poly's BioResource and Agricultural Engineering program. Members of the faculty are visiting the local community colleges, where they are encouraging prospective transfer students and local high school students to apply to the BRAE Department.

Accompanied by lecturers Kerry Langford and Tom Mastin, Dr. Ben Burgoa (pictured right) attended the "Career Exploration Day" at Alan Hancock Community College on Friday, October 12th. Burgoa commented that "as a faculty member, I feel it is critical to extend and share my enthusiasm in our program to future engineers."

Burgoa, Langford, and Mastin were not the only faculty to help in the department's recruiting efforts. Dr. Richard Cavaletto, accompanied by Dr. Bill Kellogg (AGED), and Professors Mike Zohns (HCS) and Dan Lassanske (HCS), ventured north for the day to attend the 55th annual open house at Modesto Junior College on Thursday, October 11th. Cavaletto and the others visited with faculty, alumni, and a number of prospective students. This allowed the department to further strengthen its relationship with faculty and alumni.

Faculty will visit Cuesta Community College on Wednesday afternoon, October 31st for their “Student Success Workshop: Choosing Your Major.”
