Message from the Department Head
I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year as we begin 2008 with an optimistic outlook towards the continuing development of the BioResource & Agricultural Engineering [BRAE] programs.
This is due in large part to the very generous donation our department received from Fred and Ginny Hamisch. Their gift will make it possible for us to take a significant step towards improving the professional development resources of those individuals within the irrigation industry by providing distance learning courses. This is significant due to the increased need for trained and educated people in this field and the ever increasing importance of water in California. This measure will also help advance our efforts towards our sustainability platform.
While down-turns in the economy result in challenges for higher education, we have been fortunate to weather these storms and remain strong and vibrant. This current down-turn will be no different. Six years ago Cal Poly students voted to pay additional tuition moneys that would be given directly to their college and department. These moneys have allowed the BRAE department to continue to offer quality courses and maintain equipment and facilities.
Donations from alumni and friends of the department also play an important part in helping the department fulfill its mission through uncertain financial times. I want to thank the hundreds of individuals that donate money, equipment and time each year to the department. Without your support it would be impossible for us to be successful.
With belief in our programs and support from all of you, we can continue to build premier educational programs fulfilling our strategic goals. With the Hamisch donation our department will be at the forefront of Cal Poly's “Learn by Doing” philosophy with online classes and distance learning!
Thank you for your continual support of our program and Happy New Year!

January 2008: Back In The Swing Of Things

Fred Hamisch (second from left), AE Alumnus, Makes Generous Donation to the Department
The BioResource and Agricultural Engineering Department would like to thank Frederick and Virginia Hamisch for their generous donation. Just before the New Year rang in, Fred and Ginny donated a $500,000 gift for the benefit of the BRAE Department's irrigation teaching program. The Hamischs' gift is one of the largest gifts ever made to the BioResource and Agricultural Engineering Department. Fred and Ginny credit Cal Poly with giving them a strong foundation from whic h to launch their careers and hope that this gift will provide future students the same opportunity.
Currently, the irrigation industry is facing a serious lack of trained personnel capable of designing and installing the vast irrigation systems throughout California and the rest of the United States.
One of the most serious shortages is the lack of enough qualified people to work in irrigation dealerships– which is particularly important to Fred and Ginny. The shortage is in part due to the elimination of courses offered in irrigation by other major US universities, although the BRAE Department is constantly updating and expanding its offerings. Dr. Charles Burt and the Irrigation Training and Research Center (ITRC) program at Cal Poly will assist the BRAE Department and the irrigation industry by offering this new series of high quality, web-based irrigation courses. These courses will be available to Cal Poly students, as well as to others anywhere in the US, and can be used for personal/professional enhancement as well as for credit toward degree programs at Cal Poly and other universities. The $500,000 donation from Fred and Ginny Hamisch will help make this initiative possible.
Dave Wehner, Dean of the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences, expressed, “This donation provides significant funding to develop educational resources for the irrigation industry. It will be the first disciplinary area where we will have the ability to offer distance learning courses to the public via the internet. The courses will have a tremendous impact on California because they will educate individuals on the design and installation of complex irrigation systems that are the heart of the agricultural industry.”
Fred Hamisch graduated from Cal Poly with a degree in Agricultural Engineering in 1963. His wife, Ginny, also attended Cal Poly for several years while studying elementary teacher education. Upon graduation, Fred joined the Marine Corp where he proudly served his country, before returning to civilian life and beginning his professional career in the irrigation industry. Fred began working at Hydratec in 1981 and purchased the company seven years later in 1988. Under Fred's direction the company made its business to deliver water economically and with the highest attention to conservation to the fields that produce the crops that provide the world its food and fiber.

I currently work for ITRC. Through ITRC I manage two projects. The first is a 2500-acre farm in Palmdale, CA. I provide assistance with irrigation scheduling, center pivot packages, pump designs, crop rotations, and nitrogen application/removal. The farm utilizes effluent secondary treated wastewater from the city of Palmdale. The second project is the design and construction of ITRC flap gates for irrigation districts in California. The flap gates provide improved water level control in canals making operation of the system simpler and more dependable. Furthermore, I've just begun the exciting task of teaching in the BRAE department. |

Memorial to Christopher Harvey, BRAE Stu dent
It is with great sadness, we inform you that one of our BRAE freshman students passed away over winter break. Chris Harvey died in a fatal car accident Saturday, December 8, 2007. This 18 year old from Walnut Creek was described as al ways having a smile on his face.
“We few members of Kappa Chi Fraternity knew Chris Harvey for only a short part of our lives, but he was a friend after the day we met him. His influence lives on in us, our friends, and our fraternity history. We can unanimously agree that Chris's personality was one that nobody could ever dislike. He was never caught without a smile and he had a reliable moral compass. Simply put, Chris made any acquaintance his friend. Ever since we knew him, we saw great potential in him as a future brother of Kappa Chi. Chris turned down no challenge, put others before himself, and never let rain ruin his parade. We remember Harvey as a brother and as a true friend.” --- The Brotherhood of Kappa Chi Fraternity
Chris is survived by his father Coach Chris Sr., mother Sharon, and siblings Ryan, Sarah, and Lizzie. We extend our hearts and prayers to the Harvey Family.
